Randsburg
This is one of the most unique and fun places to visit you'll ever find. Just Off of Hwy 395 about 20 miles south of Ridgecrest, Randsburg remains the booming mine town of the 1890's. Basically unchanged, main street is a step back in time. The old buildings house antiques, an old marble saloon bar and there's a soda fountain in the General Store.
Some of these buildings were moved up the hill long ago from Garlock when gold was discovered in the Yellow Aster mine. The mine has always been a rich source of gold and, with new mining techniques, is still productive.
The Museum is open on weekends and has a fine collection of mining era relics and photos. The 5 stamp mill behind the building is open to the public.
The nearby communities of Johannesburg and Red Mountain are of the same era, with interesting stores, bars, and hotels.
Both strip mining and underground mining operations are in the area. Be careful when exploring. Be careful around open mine shafts, and respect private property signs.
