Ridgecrest Ridgecrest is a great city to stage out of -- there are good motels, restaurants, an excellent small museum (Maturango) and a lot to see nearby. Home of China Lake Naval Air Station, it's a busy town with any service you're likely to need, and lots of great desert surrounding it. The Spangler Hills OHVRA is nearby. Even better, so is the Panamint Valley and Ballarat, the El Paso mountains, Randsburg, and the Trona Pinnacles. The Maturango Museum is well worth a visit. They also sponsor interpretive tours (in winter) of petroglyph and pictograph sites in the area. The Navy flies its fighter planes out of China Lake. While fun to watch, they can be a bit... disturbing.
